Institutionalisation

Terry is institutionalised. The structure and routine that Terry has followed for many years has lead to a narrowing and reduction in his ability to perform critical judgement and reasoning.

Just like a long term prisoner, Terry is surrounded by barriers that prevent his escape, only the barriers are often not imposed upon him but are of Terry's own making.

Unlike a prisoner, Terry does have the option of escape by seeking a new employer but, like many prisoners, escape is often not an option considered by Terry as his institutionalisation means he is unable to integrate himself back into the wider telecommunications society.

Terry has therefore condemned himself to a life sentence, where life means until retirement.

Is there anything we can do to help Terry reintegrate back into society?

Terry likes to wrap himself in the warm blanket of institutional policy, procedure and "plans of record" as a means of insulating himself from the cold and ever persistent winds of change. The winds will eventually wear him down to a nub or completely topple him over.

The best way to cut-through this institutionalization mentality is to measure all parties through performance. Some people may play all the processes and games. But at the end of the day, the ones who do not deliver must be cut, and the ones who do must be rewarded. Simple!

Optimizing process rarely works, and the big companies love playing this. People seem to forget that it's the people who need to change, not the project management tools. Focus on optimizing the bottom line, and ask everyone: "what have you done for me lately?"
